Baghdad, Babylon, Karbala and the southern marshes — six days through the parts of Iraq most itineraries never reach.
The trip
A six-day loop out of Baghdad, run with Untamed Borders. The spiral minaret at Samarra, the reconstructed remains of Babylon, the shrine of Imam Hussein at Karbala, the ancient cities of Uruk and Ur, and a half day by boat through the marshes where the Tigris and Euphrates meet. Small group, capped at 16, with a local English-speaking guide throughout.
Day by day
Baghdad
Arrive in the morning and transfer to the hotel, then a full day in the capital — the Al-Shaheed monument and Al-Mutanabbi street, with time for the Al Abbasid Palace and the Imam Khadhim shrine. The National Museum is closed at the time of writing.
Samarra
Day trip to Samarra, a UNESCO world heritage site and former Abbasid capital — the 8th-century great mosque and its spiral minaret. Back to Baghdad for the night.
Babylon and Karbala
Drive south, stopping at the remains of Babylon — now heavily reconstructed — and one of Saddam’s old palaces. On to Karbala and the shrine of Imam Hussein.
Uruk and Ur
Karbala to Nasiriyah, visiting the remains of the ancient cities of Uruk and Ur on the way.
The marshes
A half day in the marshes of southern Iraq by small boat — water buffalo and traditional reed houses — and, if time allows, Qurna, where the Tigris and Euphrates meet to form the Shatt al-Arab. Return to Baghdad.

Transfer to the airport.
