The trip
Kilimanjaro is the most accessible of the world's great summits — no ropes, no technical skills, just altitude, persistence and eight days of walking through five climate zones. We take the Northern Circuit, the longest and quietest route on the mountain, which means the best acclimatisation profile and the highest summit success rate.
Day by day
Arrive in Tanzania
Land at Kilimanjaro International. Gear check, briefing, and a night in a hotel in Moshi. Come in a day or two early if you want to shake off the flight.
Lemosho Gate → Mti Mkubwa
Into the rainforest on the western side of the mountain — the quiet way in.
Mti Mkubwa → Shira One
Out of the forest and onto the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth.
Shira One → Shira Two
A short, deliberate day. The whole point of this route is letting your body catch up.
Shira Two → Moir Hut, via Lava Tower
Climb high to 4,600m at Lava Tower, then sleep low at Moir. Classic acclimatisation.
Moir Hut → Buffalo Camp
Onto the Northern Circuit proper — the remote northern slopes almost nobody walks.
Buffalo Camp → Third Cave
Around the quiet side of the mountain, with Kenya out across the plain.
Third Cave → Kibo Hut
To the foot of the summit cone. Early night — you will not sleep much.
Summit day — Uhuru Peak
Midnight start, sunrise somewhere above the clouds, and 5,895m. Then down to Millennium Camp.
Millennium → Mweka Gate
The long, happy walk out. Certificates, a real shower, and a beer.
Departure
Fly home — or stay on. A safari extension is being worked out for the days after.
