The trip
A six-day loop out of Damascus, run with Untamed Borders. The Umayyad Mosque and the souks of the old city, the Crusader fortress at Krak des Chevaliers, the citadel and covered bazaar in Aleppo, the norias of Hama, and the UNESCO-listed ruins of Palmyra. Day by day
Damascus
Arrive in the morning and transfer to the hotel, then a full day in Damascus — the Umayyad Mosque, one of the oldest and largest in the world, the underground chapel of St Ananias, and the souks of the old city, finishing with a walk down Straight Street.
Krak des Chevaliers
Drive to the Crusader fortress of Krak des Chevaliers, one of the best-preserved medieval castles anywhere, with time at the fort and its view across the valley. On to Al Wadi for the night.
Homs and Aleppo
North to Aleppo, stopping briefly in Homs on the way. In Aleppo, the covered bazaar and the citadel.
Hama
From Aleppo to Hama for the norias — the wooden water wheels on the Orontes — then the old city on foot, past the Azem Palace and the hammams.
Palmyra
Across to Palmyra and the UNESCO-listed ruins of the ancient caravan city, then back to Damascus for a final evening.
Depart
Final sightseeing and shopping in Damascus, then the transfer to the airport.
